What to File

County Officials-Partisan

  • Prosecuting Attorney
  • Sheriff
  • Clerk/Register of Deeds
  • Treasurer
  • Drain Commissioner
  • Surveyor
  • County Commissioner Districts 1-7

Candidates wishing to be on the ballot must file original documents no later than 4:00 p.m. on the 15th Tuesday before the August 2024 election (April 23, 2024) with the St Clair County Clerk.  Every candidate must submit an Affidavit of Identity (see link above), and Nominating Petitions (available in County Clerk's office) with sufficient signatures or a $100 non-refundable filing fee may be made in lieu of filing petitions.  Also required is a Statement of Organization, you must establish a committee and if you plan on expending or receiving over $1,000 you must turn in required campaign finance reports.

School Boards and College Trustees

Every candidate must submit an Affidavit of Identity and Nominating Petitions with sufficient signatures.  See links above for documents, Nominating Petitions can be picked up at St Clair County Clerk's Office.  Candidates wishing to be on the ballot must file original documents not later than 4:00 pm on the 15th Tuesday before the November 2024 election (July 23, 2024) with the St Clair County Clerk's Office.  Signature requirements are:

  • St Clair County Community College Trustees:  File Community College Petitions bearing a minimum of 40 valid signatures from registered voters of the college district and up to 100 signatures.
  • Algonac, East China, Marysville, Port Huron, and Yale School Board Members:  File School District Petitions bearing a minimum of 40 valid signatures from registered voters of the specific school district and up to 100 signatures.
  • Capac and Memphis School Board Members:  File School District Petitions bearing a minimum of 6 valid signatures from registered voters of the specific school district and up to 20 signatures.

Campaign Finance

  • A candidate who seeks a community college trustee position or a school board position in a school district with a pupil enrollment count of 2,401 or more is subject to the filing requirements of the Campaign Finance Act (East China, Marysville, Port Huron and SC4 Trustees).  At a minimum a Statement of Organization will need to be filed.  See link for documents and more information.
  • A candidate who seeks a school board position in a school district with a pupil enrollment count of 2,400 or less is not subject to the filing requirements of a Campaign Finance Act as long as they do not expend or receive more than $1000 for the election.  (Algonac, Capac, Memphis, and Yale school districts)

St Clair County RESA Board Members

  • A candidate for the board must be a registered voter at least 18 years of age, a citizen of the United States and must reside within one of the St Clair County's school districts.  Additionally, a candidate must be a resident of the State of Michigan for at least 30 days; and a resident of one of the school districts on or before the 30th day prior to the date of the election.  
  • An Affidavit of Identity (see link above) must be filed by the deadline, along with Nomination Petitions.  Petitions are available at the county clerk's office.  Filing documents are submitted to St Clair County Clerk.
  • The statutes which govern the election of RESA board members through the meeting process provide that the chairperson of the meeting may accept nominations for an available position "from the floor" if no candidates filed for the position.  

City Officials - Nonpartisan

  • Candidates wishing to be on the ballot must file original documents no later than 4:00 p.m. on the 15th Tuesday before the August 2024 election (April 23, 2024) with city officials.
  • Every candidate must submit an Affidavit of Identity (see link above), Nominating Petitions (available in clerk's office) with sufficient signatures.  Also required is a Statement of Organization, you must establish a committee and if you plan on expending or receiving over $1,000 you are required to file the appropriate campaign finance reports.

City/Township Officials - Partisan

  • Candidates wishing to be on the ballot must file original documents no later than 4:00 p.m. on the 15th Tuesday before the August 2024 election (April 23rd, 2024).
  • POSITIONS TO BE ELECTED WHO FILE AT THEIR LOCAL CLERK’S OFFICE: 
    • Township Supervisor
    • Township Clerk 
    • Township Treasurer
    • Township Trustee
    • Township Constable
    • Township Park Commissioner
  • Every candidate must submit an Affidavit of Identity (see link above), and Nominating Petitions with sufficient signatures or a $100 non-refundable filing fee, if applicable, may be made in lieu of filing petitions.  Also required is a Statement of Organization, you must establish a committee and if you plan on expending or receiving over $1,000 you must also file required campaign finance reports.

Village Officials

Every candidate must submit an Affidavit of Identity (see link above) and Nominating Petition (available in the clerk's office) with sufficient signatures.  Also required is a Statement of Organization and any required statements required by the Campaign Finance Act.  Filing documents are submitted to village officials.

Precinct Delegates

Candidates wishing to be on the ballot must submit a Precinct Delegate Affidavit of Identity (see link above) to the County Clerk’s Office by 4:00 p.m. on May 7, 2024.

Candidates wishing to be a write-in candidate must file a Precinct Delegate Write-In Candidate Declaration of Intent (see link above) by 4:00 p.m. the Friday prior to the State Primary with the County Clerk or on Election Day at the voting precinct.
